Farscape Movie Rumours

Luke

At this year's WonderCon, Rockne O'Bannon confirmed that Justin Monjo is writing the script for a Farscape movie. The project is in the very early stages of pre-production.

Here is the SciFeD writeup. Copy of the article below the break.

Before appearing in the long running TV serial Stargate: SG1 actors Claudia Black (Pitch Black) and Ben Browder had previous co-starred alongside each other in the cult TV show Farscape. Farscape ran for 4 seasons, each 22 episodes long from 1999 to 2003. The show was created by Rockne O'Bannon (no relation to Alien creator Dan O'Bannon) with creature make up effects and puppetry by the acclaimed Jim Henson Productions.

Some of the shows cast!

Farscape followed the misadventures of shuttle pilot John Crichton, whom after being transported by a wormhole to the opposite endof the galaxy where he finds himself onboard a living bio-mechanical ship called Moya, along with a rag tag group of prisoners, each from a different alien species, as they escape capture from the oppressive Peacekeepers. The cast of characters included John Crichton (Ben Browder), Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) a Sebacean Peacekeeper whom learns the true oppressive nature of her kind, Ka D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe) a Luxan warrior with a bad temper, P'au Zotoh Zhaan (Virgina Hey) a Priestess belonging to the plantlike Delvian race, Dominar Rygel XVI (voiced by Jonathan Hardy) former ruler of the Hynerian Empire whom farted helium when nervous, Chiana (Gigi Edgley) a limber and seductive Nibari thief, Stark (Paul Goddard) a mentally unbalanced Stykeran, Pilot (voiced by Lani Tupu) the multi-limbed creature that acts as an intermediary between Moya and the crew, and finally Scorpius (Wayne Pygram) a Sebacean/Scarran hybrid and the shows primary villain.

The 200th episode of Stargate: SG1 even parodied Farscape!

Farscape was a cult hit during its short run, its premise borrowing heavily from Buck Rogers, and its characters taking inspiration from many sci-fi and pop culture icons; Scorpius' Hellraiser like design, Moya's similarity to the Alien Derelict, Chiana echoing the look and behavior of Blade Runner's Pris (Daryl Hannah), D'Argo's clearly Klingon leanings. The show even inspired sci-fi that followed - using the word Frell in place of the well known English expletive phrase, later mimicked by BSG's use of the work Frak. Yet despite this mixing and matching of popular icons the series was well written, well acted, well directed and thoroughly entertaining. Yet, despite being contracted for a 5 season run the show was cancelled after just 4 seasons by network Sci-Fi (now SyFy) due to low ratings. A two-part mini-series Farscape: The Peacekeepr Wars, did follow in 2004, to address the cliffhanger ending of the 4th season, but fans were left wanting more.

And now it seems their wishes may be coming true with show creator Rockne O'Bannon having confirmed at Wondercon that Justin Monjo is indeed penning the script for a Farscape movie, and that the movie is in the very early stages of pre-production
